Antenatal corticosteroids to reduce preterm deaths in low-income settings: The Lancet Global Health, 2(8), e444. doi: 10.1016/S2214-109X(14)70261-X. We aimed to assess the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of a multifaceted intervention designed to increase the use of antenatal corticosteroids at all levels of health care in low-income and middle-income countries. This was the first study of its kind in a low resource setting. Antenatal corticosteroids for pregnant women at risk of preterm birth are among the most effective hospital-based interventions to reduce neonatal mortality.
Aspirin Supplementation for Pregnancy Indicated Risk Reduction in Nulliparous Women (ASPIRIN STUDY) :( Completed); Prospective randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded clinical trial in western Kenya. This intervention has the potential to reduce the rate of preterm birth.  Given the tremendous medical, financial and emotional burden of preterm birth in the developing world and the limited resources to provide postnatal care, low dose aspirin may be just such an intervention since it is widely available, inexpensive, and safe for the mother and fetus.  A Malaria sub-study has been nested within THE ASPIRIN study to investigate, for the first time, the interaction between malaria and pregnancy starting from the first trimester. Previous studies have only focused on malaria acquired late in pregnancy.
Integrating Spiritual care into Maternity Care at a University Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya: The Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Project at the College of Health Sciences of Moi University Eldoret, Kenya, aimed to integrate spiritual care into maternity care at The Riley Mother and Baby Hospital of The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), Eldoret, Kenya, in order to provide holistic quality care. Spiritual needs of mothers of neonates admitted to the Newborn Unit at the MTRH in Eldoret, Kenya were explored using a research protocol, modified North America validated tools and unstructured interview guides. Hospital chaplains were trained using a Moi University post-graduate CPE curriculum for clinical Pastoral education and care, and engaged as spiritual care givers at the Hospital. The Kenya Chaplaincy Training Centre has been established.
Prevention of maternal and neonatal death/infections with a single oral dose of azithromycin in women in labor (in low- and middle-income countries): a randomized controlled trial: (Awaiting Institutional Approval)- To test the effectiveness of a single dose of prophylactic intrapartum azithromycin compared to placebo in reducing the risk of the composite outcome of maternal death or sepsis. To separately test the effectiveness of a single oral dose of intrapartum azithromycin prophylaxis (2 g) compared to placebo in reducing the risk of the composite outcome of intrapartum/neonatal death or sepsis. Both groups will receive the routine or usual care provided at the facility during and after labor.

Statement
Maternal and Perinatal mortalities (Maternal, Macerated stillbirths, Fresh stillbirths and early neonatal deaths) rates are unacceptably high in Kenya compared to rates in high-income countries. Furthermore; the predisposing factors that predispose to the high mortalities remain unexplained or undocumented and therefore without any intervention programs. It is for this reason that, we in Reproductive Health at Moi University, Eldoret- Kenya and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kenya, will join other Collaborators to help unravel the mechanisms behind the mortalities in our setting using innovative methods available in our hospital, Moi University School of Medicine and in our collaborating institutions. We have also joined other collaborators from Indiana University to start Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) which trains chaplains to offer spiritual care to mothers at Riley Mother and Baby Hospital with the aim of improving Maternal and Newborn Health. We are grateful to have this rare opportunity.
