Prof Peter M. Gatongi has a background training in Veterinary Medicine which he attained in 1976 from the University of Nairobi. He obtained an MSc in Epidemiology in 1984 from the same university and a PhD in the same discipline from McGill University Canada in 1995. He served in Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization for 17 years attaining the position of Assistant Director of Animal Health Research. He joined Moi University in 2003 as a senior lecturer and was soon appointed to head the Department of Epidemiology and Community Health and later appointed the dean of the school of Public Health in 2009. He has successfully supervised 28 Masters students in Public Health and 2 PhDs (and 4 currently under supervision). He is currently an Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the same school and has been an external examiner in a number of universities within East African region. He is a member of the Kenya Veterinary Board and Kenya Veterinary Association.
