Prof. Fabian Esamai is a Medical doctor by Profession having qualified with an MBChB from University of Nairobi in 1978. He then worked at Kenyatta National Hospital as a Medical Officer intern then moved to Nyanza General Hospital as a medical officer in 1979. In 1980, he was admitted for the Master of Medicine in Paediatrics at the University of Nairobi School of Medicine where he qualified with an MMed Paediatrics in 1984. He is also a holder of Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, Baltimore USA (1996) and a PhD from Linkoping University, Sweden (2002). He was posted to Kericho District Hospital as the first Paediatrician in that hospital (1984). He became the Medical Officer of Health of the then larger Kericho District in 1987 for one year and then became the Medical Superintendent of the hospital in 1988 to 1990. In 1990 he joined Moi University Faculty of Health Sciences where he started as a Lecturer in Child Health and Paediatrics (November 5th 1990). He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1995 and then to Associate Professor in 1999. He got promoted to Professor in 2005 (February 2005). He has therefore been a full Professor for 15 years. He delivered his Inaugural lecture on 27thSeptember 2007 as the second one in Moi University and the first Paediatrician to do so in Kenya. He has been Head of Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Health Sciences Moi University between 1997 and 2003, Dean School of Medicine 2005 – 2009 and Principal College of Health Sciences since September 2011-2016. He has supervised 10 PhD students seven of whom have graduated, 30 Master students who have graduated and 5 ongoing master students. He was involved in the development of all Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs in the College of Health Sciences, Moi University since 1990. He has been a member of the Moi University Senate since 1997 to date and as Dean been Chair of School Boards and as Principal, has been Chair of College Management Board, College Academic Board and College Administrative Board. He has been a member of the Moi University Management Board for 10 years (between 2005 and 2009 and again 2011 and 2016). He has been a Member of the Moi University Council for over 6 years; between 2005 and 2009 as a representative of the Town Campuses of Moi University and as Principal of College of Health Sciences between 2011 and 2012 He has published widely since 1985 with 170 publications in peer reviewed international journals through International collaborative research. He has attended hundreds of conferences, workshops and seminars over the years. He has been Chairman of the Council of the Consortium for National Health Research Consortium between 2007 and 2016. He is a member of the Kenya Science Technology and Innovation (KESTI) award Jury since 2012 to date. He is a commissioner of the East Africa Health Research Commission since 2016 representing the Health related Academia in Kenya. He is a reviewer of various peer review journals including: East African Medical Journal, Journal of Tropical Paediatrics, Kenya Journal of Health Sciences; Paediatrics, the Bulletin of WHO, Reproductive Health. He has been an external examiner for undergraduates and postgraduates in Paediatrics at University of Nairobi, Aga Khan University, Addis Ababa University, University of Namibia and Makerere University since 2001 to date. He is a member of the Kenya Medical Association and the Kenya Paediatrics Association. He is a member of the Paediatric expert panel that is working on policy guidelines on the management of pneumonia in children for the Ministry of Health. He is the Research Chair for Health Systems through the NACOSTI/IDRC sponsorship since 2015 to 2019 on Maternal and Child Health research to reduce maternal and child health in Kenya. This is the first such position in Kenya and in the region. He has developed over 20 proposals and research grants which have been funded with a total annual value of about $1 million per year since 2006 and grants smaller than $250,000 annually since 1994. Currently, he is the Principal, Alupe University College since October 2016 on leave of absence from Moi University. This is a new University College with a focus on Health Sciences, Science, Social Sciences, Information Sciences and Engineering. |
