Research Interests

My research philosophy is interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary, evolutionary, dynamic, responsive, adaptive, participatory and practical in approach; and localized to real life situation, but also informed and guided by global issues in terms of concepts, theories and real life situations in other parts of the world, both in developed and developing countries. The aim is to address critical research questions related to human dimensions of natural resources focusing on local community participation as relate to natural resource conservation, environmental protection and sustainable local socio-economic development in both rural and urban areas. Specific Research Areas include:

1.         Natural resource use conflict studies: design of integrated community-based sustainable resource management and conservation strategies including land use zonation in areas/issues involving wildlife-human conflict, parks, tourism/ecotourism, community participation, particularly in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas (ASALs) – Funded by IDRC, Canada.

2.         Tourism: Ecotourism and Community participation and local development.

3.         Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), especially in Wildlife/Tourism Areas – IDRC, Canada

5.         Disaster Preparedness - Floods and Flood Management - Community participation approach- Kenya Red Cross

6.         Sustainable Urban Management/Environmental Issues eg. solid waste management – UN-Habitat
