Biography

I am a Physician and Public Health Specialist in the area of Health Promotion who qualified from University of Nairobi in 1990 and University of London in 2012 respectively.  Apart from long standing experience in Medical Practice as a Physician, I also have vast experience in Research and Health Professionals Education since 1992 when I joined the Department of Medicine of then Moi University Faculty of Health Sciences, now Moi University College of Health Sciences.

I have accumulated considerable experience in health professionals training and administration having been in charge of undergraduate and postgraduate curricula development and implementation for a total of 9 years at different times as well as heading the Academic Model Providing Access to Health Care (AMPATH) Training Institute for 2 years.  AMPATH is a collaboration of a consortium of North American (including Canada) Academic and Health institutions, Moi University College of Health Sciences and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for research, care and education.  In addition, I have held responsible positions in various university committees and boards. Notable among which are; spearheading the establishment of the first Master of Medicine in Family Medicine in East Africa, spearheading the establishment of Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine and heading the undergraduate and post graduate curricula implementation committees at various times.  I have been the head of Department of Medicine (1993 to 2000), Dean of the School of Medicine (2009 to 2014) and Acting Principal of the College of Health Sciences (Nov 2016 to July 2019) at Moi University as well as a member of Moi University Management Board. 

I have been directly involved in activities/groups/committees whose work have realized significant achievements: The AMPATH Medical Record System (AMRS) that stores all clinical encounter forms for a cohort of HIV infected persons who are under our care.  This open system has gained worldwide acclaim and has been adopted by many countries inside and outside Africa; Identification of TDF as an effective Pre exposure prophylaxis against HIV infection, the Partners Study Group; The Webuye Health Demographic Surveillance System (WHDSS) in western Kenya that provides a platform to researchers wishing to answer pertinent questions of public health importance in the community.

Born in Siala village of now Siaya County in 1958, I attended Dhene Primary School before proceeding to Kisumu Boys’ High School and later Chavakali High School.  I was admitted to University of Nairobi in 1978 to the course of Medicine, graduated in 1984 with MBChB and undertook internship at the then New Nyanza General Hospital (Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital) in Kisumu before proceeding to Garissa and Mandera as Medical Officer.  I then joined the University of Nairobi again in 1987 for MMed program which and completed in 1990.  In 1990 I was posted to Machakos General Hospital as a Physician where I worked till March of 1991. Between 1991 and 1992, I worked as a senior Medical Officer at the Moi University Clinic.
