Dr. Vivian Tuei is a Lecturer of Biochemistry and Molecular Biosciences at the Department of Biochemistry and Clinical Chemistry in the School of Medicine, College of Health Sciences, Moi University. She received a BSc degree in Biochemistry and Chemistry (First Class Honors) from University of Nairobi in 2005 and both MSc (2007) and PhD (2010) degrees from University of Hawaii at Manoa, Hawaii, USA in Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering. Her current research interests are on the molecular basis of metabolic-related diseases and role of nutrients and toxicants particularly in diabetes mellitus, obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Prior to her joining the Department in June 2023, she worked for 8.4 years as a Lecturer of Biochemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Eldoret, Kenya while also serving as the Departmental Biochemistry Postgraduate Coordinator and Head of Department (2019-2021). She has also previously worked as a Lecturer of Biochemistry and Head of Department of Biological Sciences at University of Kabianga, Kericho, Kenya from 2012-2014. Dr. Tuei has taught over twenty different courses/topics in biochemistry and molecular biology of undergraduate and graduate levels. She continues to teach, mentor and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students on research. Majority of the postgraduate students under her supervision on their thesis research who have so far graduated have been awardees of the National Research Fund, Kenya. She is an awardee of the Cornell Alliance for Science Global Leadership Fellowship (2015) and the American Heart Association Pre-Doctoral Fellowship (2009-2010). Dr. Tuei has been serving as an Ad hoc reviewer for several journals and as an external thesis examiner for several Universities within Kenya and also abroad. She has also held various representations and memberships in Departmental, School, Senate and University-wide Committees including Curriculum Development and Review Committees amongst others. Dr. Tuei has published several peer-reviewed journal publications, abstracts and a book chapter and has participated in several academic conferences. She is a member of the Biochemistry and Biotechnology Professionals Society of Kenya (BBPSK) and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). Extracurricularly, she gives inspirational talks on science career choices to the youth amongst others.
